Looking for a durable interior wood fiber doors that are also ecological friendly? Medium density fiberboard, also known as MDF, is an excellent material for providing both a safe and aesthetically pleasing home interior.

Medium density fiberboard is related to particleboard and OSB. It consists of waste from previously cut wood products and is formed using heat, pressure, wax, and resin. Only uniform and quality wood fibers are selected from a wide variety of wood product waste.

MDF is denser than normal plywood and slightly less dense than hardboard. However, its capabilities outweigh the two woods combined. Due to its unique genetic makeup, MDF is an easy choice for many builders and homeowners.

MDF doors provide many benefits. First, they have a smooth texture which is soft to the touch and also allows for a beautiful finish when a primer coat is applied followed by colored paint. Such a beautiful finish is not possible on other types of doors.

Many admire the appearance of MDF doors in its raw form. However, stained MDF doors are available by coating them with Melamine paper which provides a wide spectrum of shades and finishes. Homeowners have the option of purchasing pre-stained MDF doors or staining the doors themselves. Homeowners who opt to perform their own stain jobs have the benefit of creating interior MDF doors that compliment the interior designs of their homes.

MDF doors are efficient in controlling sound, heat and moisture. The UV-Filled MDF door is a moisture resistant model that is ideal for bathrooms while the fire retardant model is mostly used for laundry rooms, workshops, and kitchens. The durability and all around appeal of MDF doors have shot them to the top of the list in recent years.

MDF Doors are also environmentally friendly. They are constructed using the scraps of previously cut woods, waste paper and shaved bamboo which eliminates need to cut down trees. These doors are truly recyclable and help to decrease the number for trees being cut down for construction purposes.

As with any wood, pricing for MDF doors depends on the size and complexity of the design. A standard 8 X 8 door with minimal or no design generally costs $11.50 a piece and a 13 X 8 costs $13 a piece. However, additional factors, such as color scheme and design, can affect cost in price.

Most MDF doors are sold at home improvement centers or lumberyards. However, the best place to buy custom built MDF doors is from TruStile. Established in 1995, the company is based in Denver, Colo., and is respected for its custom built doors which include over 300 styles. Although the company is a wholesale manufacturer that operates through a variety of dealers, it does accept mail orders.
