\When building a new home or replacing an old interior door it is necessary to decide what type of door to be install. There are five main types of interior doors: interior French doors, wood interior doors, glass interior doors, sliding interior doors and prehung doors.

A French door is comprised of glass panes to allow light through. The glass may be decorative or plain and the accompanying wood paneling can be any wood. Interior French doors are usually installed in pairs and are light weight in comparison to other interior doors. When asked about a classy and decorative interior door, most would respond with interior French doors.

There are two main types of wood interior doors: panel and hollow. A panel wood interior door is comprised of solid wood with a railing along the edges and horizontally through the middle. Sometimes there are two panels running horizontal along the door. The bottom rail is slightly larger than the top rail and the middle rail, regardless of its name, is actually a little below the middle of the door. A hollow door is an interior door held together with small solid strips of wood and with some sort of filling inside. These types of doors are very common.

Glass interior doors are seen quite frequently in professional offices or even homes. As the name would suggest, it is comprised mainly of glass, although most have a metal or steel frame. Glazed doors have a variety of opaqueness and are great for letting in light. Glass interior doors can be outfitted as sound-proof or even bullet-proof.

Sliding interior doors come in two main styles as well: folding and bypass. A folding door is an interior door that covers a large space adequately where a normal door might block the walkway or path. These are often seen as closet doors. A bypass door is mounted on rollers and is also mainly used on closets. A subtype of bypass doors is the pocket door which slides into a pocket inside the wall. This last type of sliding interior door is a great space saver.

Lastly, prehung interior doors are factory assembled within the frame and the hinges are pre-installed. Most people with little to no experience in installing doors choose this interior door for a do-it-yourself project because of the simplicity. Many prehung doors are hollow wood interior doors but they can be any other style.

When visiting a local hardware shop, there are many options to choose from when buying an interior door. With the proper knowledge, the decision making process will move along a lot quicker.
